Pioneers in the San Antonio Valley, an area steeped in viticultural history, Escafeld Vineyards creates award winning American wines brimming with character and personality.
Our focus is the production of exceptional small lot wines expressive of this unique highland valley appellation.
Owned and operated by Steve and Elsbeth Wetherill, Escafeld Vineyards is located in Jolon (pronounced "whole-own"), nestled in the northern foothills of the San Antonio Valley appellation in Monterey County, California.
Steve & Elsbeth purchased land for their vineyard in 1997 and today Escafeld Vineyards is crafting wines from three acres of own-rooted Merlot grapes and two acres of Zinfandel. Additionally, 2 acres of Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot & Malbec) were prepared and planted in 2002/2003.
Rich in history, the Jolon area is home to Mission San Antonio de Padua, the third mission built in California. Soon after establishing the mission, Father Serra set up a vineyard and winery, making this location one of the first viticultural areas in the USA.
Wm's Note: Elsbeth has a wonderful blog to keep up to date with what's going on at Escafeld, I suggest you give it a read sometime.
